Today, the FBI arrested Denver area resident Najibullah Zazi and his father based on allegations of suspected ties between the two men and a New York City group of alleged terrorists. According to the New York Times, the two men and the FBI were involved in several days of negotiations and although the nature of those talks have not been made public, Mr. Zazi and his attorney, Art Folsom, canceled a meeting scheduled for this morning. Also according to the NY Times, the FBI was planning to file a criminal complaint charging Mr. Zazi with crimes other than terrorism, such as lying to government officials.
So far, much of the information received by the public on this case has been through anonymous leaks, so we should approach with caution and avoid any speculation. Although he has been arrested, the FBI has not provided information as to the basis for believing that Mr. Zazi has committed crimes.
